Churches to assist with AIDS education
In a bid to stem the rising numbers in cases of sexually transmitted diseases in the TCI, the National HIV/AIDS Programme is targeting faith-based organizations to assist in educating the public on the dangers of the pandemic. Aldora Robinson, Co-ordinator for the National HIV/AIDS Programme, made the announcement at the National Inter-Primary Schools Song Competition, held on Tuesday, November 25 at the Gustarvus Lightbourne Complex. “We have people from all walks of life within the faith-based organizations, and we need to address HIV in a more dynamic way – in a way that we reach everyone. And the church is supposed to reach all of us - therefore our focus this year (is on the church). ,” Robinson noted.

The National HIV/AIDS Programme begins its alliance with the faith-based organizations by hosting a jeopardy competition with church youth on Monday, December 1. The church that comes out on top is to receive cash incentive to develop a programme aimed at educating the public about the dangers of HIV/AIDS.
“We are looking for churches to become more involved and develop faith-based ministries as far as HIV is concerned,” Robinson said.

The Co-ordinator for the National HIV/AIDS programme noted that schools were being empowered to effectively deliver the message of the dreaded disease and the effects it is liable to pose on production and social life in the Turks and Caicos Islands. She said in the coming year, closer focus will me made on the schools with a number of youth-oriented programmes, some of which she said existed sometime in the past but later became extinct. However, she noted that those programmes would be resurrected.

“Next year we are going to have an exciting programme, not only to focus on youth, but the peer educators within the high schools would have to address those issues within the primary schools – we want to reach everyone – and we all have a role to play, that is the most important part that we need to realize,” Robinson noted.
Addressing the Inter-Primary Schools Song Competition, Robinson expressed the desire to have all the songs recorded and place on Compact Discs, so that they can be played at events hosted by her organization and as a means of educating the general populace.
