The National Program Coordinator, Mrs. Cherylann Jones, noted that the state of the HIV/AIDS treatment and care program is at a critical juncture and it is imperative we build capacity among health care providers and volunteers.  The goal behind the VCT training, is to increase the local cadre of trained providers and improve the standard of treatment, care and support as it relates to HIV/AIDS.

This certified five-day course was designed to produce individuals qualified to use the VCT protocol to provide counseling for HIV in the Turks and Caicos Islands.  The ultimate goal is to increase the number of qualified counselors and so strengthen the HIV treatment and cares services in the TCI.

The course sought to; among other things:

  • Influence in a positive way the attitudes of the participant toward the benefits of VCT.
  • Provide basic training in counseling skills , basic HIV information and VCT
  • Provide the participant with the knowledge and skills needed to provide VCT services effectively to persons needing/requesting HIV test or information

The five day training engaged various teaching methodology including, group exercises, role plays, illustrated lectures and group discussions and practical experience with clients. Participants did their practical exercises at Her Majesty’s Prison, where at least 20 inmates participated in the practice group education and counseling sessions.

Participants who successfully completed this course were certified by JHIEPGO and received their personal handbook and counseling protocol.

The 19 participants at the workshop were selected from clinics across the islands, social workers and youth workers. They were carefully selected as part of the strategy to ensure that they represent key areas where HIV testing is done or where social services are requested.

Minister of Health, Hon. Lillian Boyce was present to welcome participants and lend her support to the overall goal and purpose of the exercise. She noted was trained counselors were and that these workers must now join with the program in intensifying prevention of HIV efforts.
