| Peer Educators back in Provo |
For the fifth year in a row, The BARCAM, a Trinidadian based group has visited the Turks and Caicos Islands to give youths in Providenciales the skills they need to be positive and effective leaders within their community. The Seminar, held from June 14 to 16 at Clement Howell High School’s auditorium, focused on three main sections.

The first was understanding the role as a peer educator, gaining the skills as a peer educator and learning how to become an effective leader. Through the training, the group of young people, ranging from 17 – 25, would have the skills to go back to their respective communities and educate their peers on various aspects of teenage life.
This year, The BARCAM sent three members, including the founder of the organisation - Selwyn Lewis - who also played a key role as the group facilitator. In an exclusive interview with The Sun, Cherry -Ann Davis, a member of The BARCAM, expressed how excited she was to be back in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
She noted by the size of the group, and how interested the members seemed, the seminar has once again been very successful. When asked if this year was any better or worst than previous years, she said, “This year is just different, new people, a new location. Each year gets different and that is something I always look forward to.”
‘BARCAM’ is a word that was especially coined up for the group. It means ‘the struggle to uplift and unify mankind’. They have been working closely with the National Aids Programme and are looking forward to returning next year to continue the work that they have started in the Turks and Caicos Islands. |
